The Walk of Life

1985

In 1985 Pete organized and lead a team on a 500 mile sponsored walk from the Faslane Naval Base in Glasgow to HMS Dolphin in Gosport. He did this to raise money for his good friend and 'Opo' Snowy Clingham. Snowy had been very badly injured in a fall at work. He needed specialist treatment and support that was not readily provided by the Navy. At that time the level of Welfare Support for injured service personnel was very limited and Pete was determined that his mate should be looked after properly. Pete was never shy in asking for support, so he managed to gain the approval of the Rock Band Dire Straits to use the name of their hit single "Walk of Life" as the name of the event. The band even provided Platinum discs to support it. For anyone who knew Pete, to walk 500 miles was an unbelievable challenge. Pete was normally reluctant to walk anywhere, even to catch a bus or taxi! Despite this obstacle the event was a great success. The toughest part proved to be surviving the hospitality of all the British Legion and Royal Naval Association clubs that they stayed in every night. Pete reckoned that the start of every morning's walk was a nightmare. They had usually walked themselves sober by midday and yet were drunk again before midnight.
